Mystic Desert Sunrise by Andrew J. Lee
What you see here is a small geothermal geyser, better known as the Fly Geyser. It perches on top a series of terraces around its mound, spraying hot waters high into the sky in the early morning hours. The geyser itself is about 5-6 feet high. Included the mound, it is about 12-13 feet from the ground. The most distinctive feature of this geyser is the colors: rich and vibrant shades of green, red, orange, and rust. These magnificent colors are caused by the thermophilic algae that thrive in moist and hot environment. This is a “living” organism in the sense that it “grows” several inches each year.
